Ulcer is a sore caused by a cut or break in the lining of the body. Both the external and internal lining. ulcers are named based on the area it occurs thus; gastric ulcer (stomach), duodenal ulcer(duodenum), leg ulcer(legs), mouth ulcer(mouth), etc.

An arterial ulcer is an ulcer due to inadequate blood supply to the affected area (ischaemia), arterial ulcers tend to occur on the lower legs and feet. The most common kind of ulcer is the peptic ulcer.

Peptic ulcer

This occurs when digestive juice damages the lining of the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine or the oesophagus. Peptic ulcers are most often caused from inflammation after being infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria and also long-term use of painkillers drugs causes it.

Types of peptic ulcer

Peptic ulcer can develop in the following places

  • stomach (gastric ulcer)
  • oesophagus (esophageal ulcer)
  • duodenum (duodenal ulcer), the first portion of the small intestine.

Symptoms of ulcer

All the types of peptic ulcer has the same symptoms, burning pain being the most common.

  • Bloating or the feeling of being full
  • Belching
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Chest pain.

Treatment

Treatment of ulcer depends on the cause, in case of H. pylori, antibacterias can be administered to kill the bacteria. Many believes akamu can be used for ulcer treatment

In the case of prolonged intake of painkillers, medication that reduces your stomach acid will be administered. Probiotics can also be taken to help build immunity.
