Lice plural of louse, are wingless parasites that live on human hair and feed on blood from the scalp. It is common among preschool children, and also female adults that do not care for their hair.
It can be transferred from person to person through head to head contact, or sharing of combs, brushes, hats, head bands and other personal items.
It is worthy to note that lice do not live on pets. It also have not be known to transmit any disease condition, itching is the only major health issue they cause. They can live in all types of hair.
Home Treatments For Lice
As the name implies, combing a wet hair with a fine toothed comb. After wetting the hair, spray conditioners, and carefully divide the hair into many strands for easier combing. In some cases, a magnifying glass to clearly examine each strand of hair and remove the individual lice.
There are several common home products that may kill lice by depriving them of air and smothering them. These products include petroleum jelly (Vaseline), olive oil, butter, or mayonnaise.
Any of these products may be applied to the scalp and hair, covered with a shower cap, and left on overnight.
Some important oils can suffocate lice and kill them. Some of these oil includes coconut oil, Olive oil, tea tree oil etc.
Since lice can leave outside their hosts for up to 24hours, proper cleanings of the house and clothing materials are recommended for adequate management.
